We use camera phones with GPS to collect data from the survey sites.
using a Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 to capture images from a plantation in the Namulonge crop resource research institute, with staff from the institute. Where the experts are present, they give us a diagnosis of the health of the plant to accompany the image and position data. This information is uploaded by the phone to the app engine, and displayed immediately on the map on the home page. (For remote areas with limited network coverage, we can also cache the data on the phone and upload in bulk once network is available)

Mobile data collection in the field

Here our software developer Guy Acellam is using a Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 to capture images from a plantation in the Namulonge crop resource research institute, with staff from the institute. Where the experts are present, they give us a diagnosis of the health of the plant to accompany the image and position data. This information is uploaded by the phone to the app engine, and displayed immediately on the map on the home page. (For remote areas with limited network coverage, we can also cache the data on the phone and upload in bulk once network is available).

We use a customised version of the open data kit (screenshots above) to carry out data collection with phones. With this we can collect image and location data, and if an expert is performing the survey they can optionally provide a diagnosis which helps to calibrate our automated system.
Classification of disease

We automatically analyse each image which is uploaded the the server to find evidence of healthy or diseased leaves. Diagnosis of Disease can also be done on the phone
