Open Cities App Challenge
“Interoperable web services, open data, and standard protocols are at least as important as open source.” – Tim O’Reilly.
Open Cities App Challenge is now open!
The App Challenge, part of the EU-funded Open Cities project; is a free on-line competition open to everyone and involves the creation and design of an app which uses Open Data.
The Open Data is provided by eight participating European cities;(Helsinki, Berlin, Amsterdam, Paris, Rome, Barcelona, London and Bologna). These cities have opened their data for private and commercial use, making them available through the projects Open Data and Open Sensor Networks platforms.
The project aims to improve the quality of city-life and use of urban spaces, advance networks ideas and involve residents in the creation of the smart cities of tomorrow.
The App Challenge competition runs until June 30th, 2012. A short-list of ten finalists will be chosen to present their app live in front of a live jury during the Smart Cities Expo 2012 taking place in Barcelona this November.
The winner will receive the Best Open Cities App and a prize of €3,000.
Participants can visit the project’s website Open Cities to check and download the available data, or they can use Open Data from any other source.
Apps4bcn is a functional mobile apps competition which aims to reward the best innovative mobile apps that clearly contribute towards the creation or improvement of services linked to Barcelona and its people, businesses, entrepreneurs and administrations.
The focus of the applications must be on finding solutions that help improve existing city services, or offer new ones. Developers may focus their projects on municipal services and the city of Barcelona, including the following: enterprise city, tourism, environment, public participation or urban planning.
Although it’s not essential, it would be an advantage if the data source for this competition was Open Data, published by the City Council or other bodies.
Apps4bcn is being organised by Barcelona City Council, with the support of Vodafone and Toshiba.
The competition runs until May 17th.
In the initial phase, ten lucky semi-finalists will be chosen and then the final winners will be selected.
There will be 2 x 1st prizes and 2 x second prize winners that will be announced at a ceremony, during the Biz Barcelona event, June 13-14th.
More news coming soon.
